To that end, Major League Baseball has used the Minor Leagues as something of a guinea pig for rules that will make the game go faster.
Cooper of Baseball America reported “stricter enforcement” of a pitch clock of 14 seconds with nobody on base and 18 seconds with runners on, as well as a rule requiring hitters to stay in the batter’s box through the at-bat.
“On their first day of enforcement, the new rules appeared to cut more than 25 minutes from the average game time,” Cooper Reported.
“Data on MiLB average time of game goes back to 2005,” Cooper added.
As baseball has gotten more oriented to the true results of home runs, walks and strikeouts, there’s been less action.
